“A nation will not survive morally or economically when so few have so much and so many have so little”

India is currently hitting the headlines for being a most unequal country in the world, but why is it so?

Based on the new India Human Development Survey (IHDS), which provides data on income inequality for the first time, India scores a level of income equality lower than Russia, the United States, China and Brazil, and more richest 5% own 68.6%, while the top 10% have 76.3%. At the other end of the pyramid, the poorer half jostles for a mere 4.1% of national wealth.

At the other end of the pyramid, the poorer half jostles for a mere 4.1% of national wealth.

Apart from economic inequality, we do possess the social inequality because of the stereotype mentality that the citizen of this country carries since ages….

In India, discriminatory attitude towards men and women have existed for generations and thus it affect the lives of both genders. Although the constitution of India has granted men and women equal rights, but gender gap still remains.

Indian laws on Rape, Dowry and Adultery have women‘s safety at heart, but these highly discriminatory practices are still taking place at an alarming rate…..

The social stigma that women are housekeepers and should be confined to the four walls of the house is perhaps a viable cause of gender disparity. They should not raise their voice regarding their fortune for the sake of the prestige of the family. In patriarchal society a lot of weightage is given to men.”

The root cause of gender inequality in Indian society lies in its patriarchy system. Both these categories are deeply intertwined and inequality of one type affects the inequality in another e.g., Social Inequality due to gender have large impact on income of women.

Also, not only gender inequality we have this inequality in the name of caste, religion and ethnicity….

Along with these conditions, the pandemic face of COVID-19 has made this even sharper and how it exacerbated existing inequalities of wealth, gender and education. The wealth of billionaires increased by 35% during the lockdown and by 90% since 2009, they are making crores of rupees every hour…

But how long will we face it, we need to take some necessary steps not only for our country but for the betterment of our lives too…..

We need to be more unconventional rather than be a compartmentalize…
