SAILING THROUGH THE STORM

“Yada yada hi dharmasya glanirbhavati bharat…” says the Gita. Whenever someone mistreats the mother nature, She teaches them a lesson. When we polluted the mother earth, nature gave us many warnings but we were careless. So, in 2019, there came a storm named corona with great power of death and destruction.

The pandemic has posed numerous unprecedented challenges to our lives. While these range over a wide spectrum of socio-economic activities, I will focus on the ordeal of the education system. Our education system depends on schools and colleges where students follow the instructions of Mentors.

They remain in school from morning to afternoon, studying, eating and playing together with their classmates. But this pandemic compelled us to abandon this way of learning, that has continued since centuries, and turn to a strange new medium, online learning. So, all public and private educational systems have had to adapt to online teaching.

But this is easier said than done. Online teaching proved to be challenging for teachers as they have had to teach with minimum or no pay- while putting double effort for online teaching – as some guardians aren’t paying fees or unable to, due to this pandemic. So, schools were helpless.

There are remote villages where owning a phone is a luxury- forget internet connectivity. As a result, many students have left schools. Further-students are being deprived of the friendly environment of offline learning. They are getting vulnerable to feelings of loneliness and becoming prone to depression.

What I have discussed is only a small fraction of the destruction this pandemic has caused. If this continues to be the scenario, then I’m afraid darkness will shed into our lives and our civilization will stand still. So, let us learn from this warning of nature and make the world a better place.
