The Beauty of Meghalaya

Meghalaya, a beautiful state tucked away in Northeast India, is one of the few places that left me amazed. This “Land of Clouds” is best known for its pristine waterfalls, picturesque beauty and Mawsynram, the place that receives the most rainfall in the country.

The state is filled with mesmerizing locations which leave one captivated. Meghalaya for me is the land of rain as it is a constant there and makes its natural landscape look like a fantasy setting. Meghalaya is filled to the brim with beautiful places to visit:

 1. Umiam lake: It is a large man-made reservoir built by damming the river Umiam. It is a popular tourist attraction for kayaking, boating, scooting.

2. Elephant Falls: this fall is a series of three waterfalls. The falls got their name because a rock nearby looks like an elephant. The waterfall becomes abundant during the monsoon. You will find stalls selling handicrafts that you can buy as a keepsake of Meghalaya.

3. Cherrapunji : It is the delight of people who love rain. The Mawsmai and Arwah caves are nearby. The seven sisters waterfall and the rainbow waterfall are iconic for their view. The misty landscape of Cherrapunji gives it a surreal appearance. From Cherrapunji you can also go to see the famed living root bridges.

4. Lake Hyadari Park : Phan Nonglait Park, formerly known as Lady Hydari Park is one of the many lungs of Shillong city and one of the most popular outdoor recreational areas. There is a small lake with its resident population of pelicans that will keep you occupied. The mini zoo attached to the Phan Nonglait Park is another attraction – residents include various species of antelope, raptors, and small mammals. There is also a small museum on the premises where you can browse through exhibits that showcase the natural riches of the state.

Visiting Meghalaya during the Cherry Blossom Festival in November was a breathtaking experience. The Himalayan Cherry Blossoms can be found in the wild in the Khasi hills. And the Government of Meghalaya has planted them in several places. They are also protected by bamboo tree guards that add to their beauty.

A trip to the scenic Meghalaya is a wonderful experience. The state is a must for people who love nature and wildlife. The caves, the waterfalls are so mesmerizing. The beauty of Meghalaya cannot be put into words.
